The Board of Directors at Theatre L’Homme Dieu

The Board of Directors of Theatre L’Homme Dieu (TLHD) provides strategic leadership to sustain our mission to present exceptional live theatre, fine arts, and educational programming that celebrates culture and nurtures community.

The TLHD Board is comprised of seven to fifteen members serving three-year terms. We welcome statements of interest at any time from individuals who would like to serve on our board.

Commitment to building diversity on the TLHD Board

To build a board that is truly representative of the audiences we serve, our staff, communities, and the performers we bring to our stages, we specifically invite expressions of interest from individuals in and beyond Alexandria, young professionals, professionals working in the arts, business and private and public sectors, and those from diverse ages, and racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Always evolving

Board terms at TLHD are staggered, creating a dynamic and evolving atmosphere where fresh ideas are encouraged. We are seeking board members who are passionate about theatre and performing arts and the vibrancy of our nonprofit organization. Priority for membership is given to nominees with a variety of strengths and perspectives that deepen our connection to our local and extended theatre community and reflect our organizational values.

Board Member Responsibilities

Regularly attend Board meetings and actively participate in board meeting discussions. The Board meets a minimum of six times per year. Remote attendance is permissible.
Regularly attend TLHD performances and special events.
Make personally meaningful financial contributions to general operations or special funds.
Serve on a committee and provide leadership on committees as needed. Committees currently include the executive committee and finance committee.
Serve a 3 year term, with the possibility of renewing for a second term.
Be available for consultation by staff and fellow board members.
Willingness to consider attendance at a full day board retreat at least once during a term.

The TLHD Board works together in a respectful and professional environment. Board candidates should agree to our commitment to the following principles and shared agreements.

LISTEN. We promote an environment of exchange where each person’s thoughts and input are heard with open minds. PERSPECTIVE. We encourage diverse ideas and thoughts that help lead to new ways of thinking. EMPATHY. We commit to an environment that is kind and allows people to speak freely without judgment. RESPECT. We encourage vulnerability so people can express their perspectives in a respectful manner. CONFIDENTIALITY. Keep internal discussions internal. This is a gossip-free zone. We promote the TLHD mission and programs - not what people say in meetings. When confidentiality is given and expected, people feel safe to speak truthfully. ACCOUNTABILITY. Find a healthy, constructive way to call in each other if/when there is mis-information, if/when agreements are broken. It is everyone’s responsibility to act with humor and respect. Call in “say more” when in disagreement. Speak up respectfully when we disagree so we can all learn.
